The National Portrait Gallery in London's West End will launch a new exhibition this year showcasing the work of acclaimed Regency painter Thomas Lawrence.

Described by the gallery as "the greatest British portrait painter of his generation", Lawrence enjoyed success and international acclaim in the early decades of the 19th century.

The exhibition, which is the first of its kind in the UK for more than 30 years, will run from October 21st this year to January 23rd 2011.

It will feature a total of 54 works by Lawrence, including his most famous paintings and drawings.

Visitors can look out for highlights such as the full-length painting of actress Elizabeth Farren and the portrait of Pope Pius II, which offer an insight into Lawrence's style and its associations with the Regency period.

People planning a trip to the West End can also see the BP Portrait Award 2010 exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery until September 19th.
